23 Tips For an Incredible 2023

mindset advice Dec 30, 2022

Read time: 7 minutes.

As we close the door on 2022 and look ahead to the new year, it's natural to feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for what's to come. The start of a new year is always a great time to set goals, plan, and dream big about the future.

But let's be honest; achieving those goals and making those plans a reality can be tough. That's where this blog post comes in. We've compiled a list of 23 tips to help you make the most of your year and have an incredible 2023.

Whether you're looking to improve your health, boost your career, or live a more fulfilling life, these tips will give you the tools and motivation you need to succeed. So let's get started!

#1 - Focus on Systems, Not Goals

As the legend James Clear put it, "You do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems."

When your setting your goals this year, focus on creating a sustainable system to get there.

That way, when you get there, you'll stay there.

#2 - Avoid Distractions

If you're reading this on your phone, I want you to think about how many notifications you have on it and how many times those notifications have prevented you from doing the work you're supposed to do.

There is no need for most of those notifications so TURN THEM OFF.

#3 - Write Shit Down

Your brain is an incredible machine, but it still forgets where you last put your wallet and car keys.

It is so important to write shit down. Not only will it help you remember things but it will also help you figure things out during tough times.

Each morning I ask myself five questions, and in 2023, you should do the same...

1. What's on your mind?

2. What are you grateful for?

3. What three things are you focused on completing today?

4. What are you going to do for fun today?

5. Quote of The Day (I have to find a good quote and paste it here before I close my journal)

#4 - Make Your Health a Priority

Whenever I'm fully focused on my Gym Routine, Tracking my Nutrition, Sleeping 7 hours a night and drinking plenty of water, I feel INCREDIBLE!

And so will you!

#5 - Do Hard Things

I always say, "Hard Things Easy Life, Easy Things Hard Life."

If you choose easy things, life has a way of creeping up and f**king you.

If you choose hard things, you have better ways of dealing with what life throws your way.

Here are three things that are hard to do that you should be doing...

1. Everything in #4

2. Doing some form of Cold Water Exposure Every Day

3. Not complaining or talking sh*t about other people.

#6 - Have a Back Up Plan

You won't always be able to "Track Your Macros" or "Hit The Gym 4 Times a Week", so on those busy weeks when life gets in the way, have a backup plan.

This could be Home Workouts or Choosing Healthy options only on the menu.

Whatever "rules of thumb" you need to create to stay on track.

#7 - Understand Self Discipline

"Motivation is doing things when you feel like doing it, and Discipline is doing things regardless of how you feel."

If you rely on motivation to get things done this year, you won't get many things done.

Learn how to talk to yourself in periods of doubt or procrastination

so on those difficult days, you still get the job done!

#8 - Find a Good Work/Life Balance

You need to put the work in to reach your goals, but it's also important to remember what you're doing all this for.

How I've managed to do this over the years by following some simple rules.

1. No working after 6pm so I can see my kids before they go to bed

2. No putting work on Weekends so I can spend them with my family

3. Saying no to opportunities that take me away from home for more than a week

Some might view these as sacrifices, but I see them as the good life.

#9 - Find a Community of Like-Minded People

Most people you spend time with don't always want the same things you want for your life.

Friends and Family are not always the most supportive of people, which is why you need to "find Your Tribe."

Finding a community of Like-Minded People, either in Person or Online, will help you keep on track during difficult times and give you little pockets of inspiration and motivation when you need it most.

The more you lean in on a community, the better it gets!

#10 - Remove Bellends From Your Life

Life is too short for bellends! Remove them from your life, and you'll instantly receive an abundance of energy and time!

#11 - Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries with others can be tough, but when you start to implement it your life gets better and you get so many more things done

Here are some that I use in my life...

1. Be ok about not getting back to every message from strangers on the internet, especially if it impacts my time with family and friends

2. Decline any requests for my time if it's going to take me away from any of my projects.

3. Let people know you don't work weekends so you can spend them with your family.

4. Put your phone on Airplane mode after 8pm and set it to "Emergency Contacts Only"

This also leads to another important tip..

#12 - Learn to say No

I find it hard to say no and upon reflection in 2022, I said yes to far too many things. The thing about saying no is the outcome of doing so is always a positive one..

  • You say "no," and they say ok - Well done, you have made the right decision and got your time back.
  • You say "no," and that person gets angry - Well done, you have made the right decision as that person didn't deserve your time.

#13 - Take on a Challenge

This could be a fat loss challenge, a marathon or even starting a business.

Take on something out of your comfort zone and set a date for achieving it.

Remember "Parkinsons' Law" - A Task will take as long as the time that you give it.

#14 - Have a Clear Out

It's amazing how much "stuff" takes up mental space in your head!

Open your wardrobes, and if there are clothes in there you haven't worn for 6 months, chuck em out!

Open your Kitchen Drawers and Cupboards and Get Rid of all those batteries and spices you can't pronounce!

Open your inbox and take an afternoon deleting and archiving your messages down to "Inbox Zero."

Whenever I do these things, I feel awesome!

#15 - Make Time For Fun

When was the last time you full-on belly laughed?

I bet it was when you were doing something fun!

Make time for fun in 2023. It's good for you, and it makes you feel incredible.

#16 - Learn Something New

They say, "You Learn Something New Every Day", but a lot of the things you learn don't help improve your life.

Focus on learning a skill that makes you more valuable to others so you can make money from it.

(I recommend "Video Editing.")

Focus on learning a skill that keeps you on the planet longer.

(I recommend a "Martial Art.")

Focus on learning a skill that will save you money.

(I recommend "Carpentry")

#17 - Ask for Help

If you're a "Brit" and you're reading this, we're TERRIBLE at asking for help!

We think we can solve our problems and, given enough time; we might be able to do so.

But we can solve it much quicker if we ask for help!

When asking for help, you're giving someone a gift by letting them help you because "Contribution" is a powerful feeling.

As Tony Robbins Said...

"Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience lifes deepest joy; True Fulfillment"

#18 - Go To Bed Earlier

People always ask me, "Jay, how the hell do you get up at 4:30 am" and the simple answer is I go to bed earlier.

Common sense isn't common practice.

Getting enough sleep solves many problems with your physical and mental health, and if you're an Earlybird like me (or want to become one), hit that snooze button around 9:30 pm.

#19 - Reduce Stress and Build Your Stress Tolerance

It's not easy to do but remember what I said "Hard Things Easy Life, Easy Things, Hard Life."

When it comes to reducing stress, there are two things to focus on, Reducing Stress Down and Building up your Stress Tolerance.

Things to help you reduce your stress

  • Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Not hanging around with bellends
  • Hobbies

Things to help you build your stress tolerance

  • Cold Water Exposure
  • Lifting Weights
  • Stretching and Yoga
  • Breathwork (I recommend Wim Hof Breathing)

#20 - Book In Things to Look Forward To

Get your diary out and look at April, July and October. I want you to book some things to look forward to in 2023

These could be holidays, weekends away or festivals and music events, whatever tickles your fancy!

Don't forget to plan them with family and friends so you can connect with them and tick the fun box simultaneously!

#21 - Reward Yourself

When was the last time you rewarded yourself for your hard work?

When you plan out your goals and set your systems, I also want to write down how you will reward yourself if you hit those milestones.

When you do this, you. "solidify the habit", enabling you to set bigger goals.

(and bigger rewards too!)

#22 - Go All in on Something and "Turn Pro"

What is something in your life that you could be taking more seriously and upping your game one?

Is it a Martial Art?

Is it your Career?

When you finally decide to go all in on something, the game completely changes!

Here's one of my favourite quotes from the book "Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield"

"Turning pro is a mindset. If we are struggling with fear, self-sabotage, procrastination, self-doubt, etc., the problem is, we’re thinking like amateurs.

Amateurs don’t show up. Amateurs crap out. Amateurs let adversity defeat them. The pro thinks differently. He shows up, he does his work, he keeps on truckin’, no matter what."

It's time for you to Turn Pro in 2023
